집단적 맥락에서 바라본 따돌림 양상 및 개선방안

본 연구는 사회심리학과 사회과교육의 통섭적 접근을 통해 집단따돌림 상황에서 작동하는 또래집단규범의 영향력을 살펴보고, 다수의 무지로 인해 집단따돌림 현상이 심화되는지 확인하였다. 조사 결과, 학급 내 집단따돌림 상황에서 강화자·방관자로 행동하는 절반 이상의 학생들은 학급 내 따돌림 상황에 대해 낮은 수준의 허용적 태도(높은 수준의 부정적 태도)를 보이고 있었다. 그러나 이 학생들은 학급 내 따돌림에 찬성하는 규범이 존재한다고 인지하여, 본래 따돌림에 찬성하지 않으면서도 따돌림을 지속시키는 방향으로 행동하고 있었다. 그리고 다수의 무지가 존재하는 경우(학생들이 실제보다 학급 내 따돌림에 허용적인 집단규범이 존재한다고 과대평가하는 경우), 집단따돌림을 보다 심화시키는 방향으로 학생들은 행동하고 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 집단규범에 대한 학생들의 잘못된 인식을 바로잡고자, 학생들에게 사회규범 접근법을 처치하였다. 사회규범 접근법은 학생들에게 학급 내 존재하는 다수의 무지를 알려주어 학생들이 본래 자신의 태도대로 행동하도록 유도하는 방법이다. 처치 결과, 따돌림 강화·방관 행동의사는 강화자 집단 학생들에게서 유의하게 감소하고, 따돌림 방어 행동의사는 방관자 집단 학생들에게서 유의하게 증가했다. 이와 같은 결과는 집단 내에서 주변을 의식하며 행동하는 청소년의 모습이 학급 내 따돌림을 지속·심화시키는 하나의 원인으로 작동함을 보여준다. 그리고 집단규범에 대한 청소년들의 인식을 바로잡는 사회규범 접근법이 집단따돌림의 지속·심화를 막을 수 있는 효과적인 방법임을 실증적으로 보여준다. 학급 내 건강한 집단규범이 정착되고 조화로운 학급 공동체로의 발전을 위해 본 연구가 유용한 자료로 활용되길 기대한다.
Abstract
School bullying which brings about severe consequences has been on the rise. Based on the theory of social influence, this study supposes that peer group norms influence patterns of school bullying, with pluralistic ignorance worsening the bullying situation. This study proposes using the social norms approach in an attempt to eliminate pluralistic ignorance and to prevent school bullying, and examines the effectiveness of the approach. First, considering adolescents as members of peer groups, this study distinguishes itself from previous studies by taking into account bystanders and group dynamics to prevent bullying. Second, this study leads students to correct their misperceived group norms and not to remain in the spiral of silence by social norms approach which presenting actual group norms. Third, this study provides empirical evidence on different effects of the social norms approach depending on a student’s participant role in the bullying situation. Drawing on the theory of reasoned action, this study confirms that this approach could be more effective for students whose attitudes and behaviors are inconsistent, and seldom effective for students who have permissive attitudes toward bullying. It is worth emphasizing that anti-bullying education must be imbued with the civic values such as human rights and recognition and respect for others. By establishing positive group norms, adolescents will grow into responsible citizens, thus allowing our society to be more mature.
