Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among bystander’s reactions, their anti-bullying attitudes and perceived teacher’s intervention ability in bullying situation. In particular, a moderating effect of perceived teacher’s intervention ability was examined between bystander’s anti-bullying attitudes and the level of defending behavior and assisting behavior. For this purpose, 229 survey results completed by fourth grade students in four schools in metropolitan area was analyzed, test examined two particular areas of bystander’s reactions(defending behavior and assisting behavior), anti-bullying attitudes, and perceived teacher’s intervention ability, and the hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted, thereby yielding the following findings. Firstly, bystander’s anti-bullying attitudes were correlated with defending behavior positively and with assisting behavior negatively. This showed bystander’s attitudes could play an important role in reducing bullying. Secondly, it was found that anti-bullying attitudes predicted defending behavior positively and assisting behavior negatively. The anti-bullying attitudes explained defending behavior more than assisting behavior. Thirdly, moderating effect of perceived teacher’s intervention was effective only between anti-bullying attitudes and defending behavior. It implies that bystander perceiving teacher’s intervention ability highly was more likely to defend victims, thus interaction effect between anti-bullying attitudes and perceived teacher’s intervention was found. Effective intervention strategies and educational implication were discussed based on the results.
