Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of perceived brisk walking for female college students measuring steps/sec, walking time, walking velocity, and heart rate. A total of 20 female college students were recruited, who are 10 active individuals (21.60±1.84 yrs, 20.60±2.53 kg/m2) and 10 inactive individuals (20.10±0.32 yrs, 21.86±2.14 kg/m2). All participants were asked to take 1,000m brisk walking with their own perceived walking speed. To measure steps taken, Yamax pedometer (Digiwalker 650) and Yamasa pedometer(MP 100) were employed. The walking velocity was measured by SPI Elite (GPSports). The number of heart rate was measured by Polar (Polar™ T31 Transmitter). Descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-moment correlation analysis, and nonparametric inferential analysis were computed using SPSS (SPSS Inc., USA) to investigate the relationships of the perceived brisk walking with the variables employed and to examine the difference of the characteristics between different manufactures of pedometers and active and inactive groups, respectively. The findings of this study were as follows: 1) There was statistical difference between perceived brisk walking steps taken by two pedometers of different companies. 2) The active group walked faster than inactive. 3) Walking speed, heart rate, VO2max showed high correlation. 4) The active group perceived the given brisk walking based on their own % heart rate as moderate intensity. However, the inactive group perceived the given of walking speed as a vigorous intensity. 5) The active group reached the physical activity guideline of healthy lifestyle in terms of brisk walking recommended by CDC or ACSM nevertheless, the inactive group did not meet the guideline. For the future studies, the definition of “brisk” should be revised to determine the moderate intensity of physical activity, especially walking activity, for different age groups and various populations. It will help to obtain more accurate effects of physical activity interventions and eventually to lead reaching the physical activity guideline to enhance people’s health.
