Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship in cardiorespiratory fitness, depression symptoms, blood BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), and cardiovascular disease in female obese adolescents. Forty-eight female adolescents were participated in this study (age 15.0±0.82 yrs, BMI 30.66±1.88 kg/m2). Cardiorespiratory fitness was negatively associated with depression symptoms(r=-0.57, p<0/05), blood cholesterol(r=-0.54, p<0.05), triglyceride(r=-0.47, p<0.05), low density lipoprotein(r=-0.72, p<0.05), and glucose(r=-0.65, p<0.05), respectively. Cardiorespiratory fitness was positively associated with resting blood BDNF(r=-0.49, p<0.05) and high density lipoprotein(r=0.59, p<0.05). Regression data showed that an increase by 1ml/kg/min in cardiorespiratory fitness significantly increased blood BDNF by 0.49ng/ml and significantly decreased depression symptoms by 0.47 point. Future search is needed to determine cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiovascular disease risk factor as well as considering platelet and muscle BDNF levels.
