Abstract

Currently various physical activity promotion strategies have incorporated encouraging to increase walking steps. Mobile applications to change physical activity behavior, especially walking steps, have developed and applied to individual consumers and public intervention programs. The purpose of this review was to explore walking behavior model, mobile walking application components and its gamification design concept as well as Seoul Metropolitan citizen’s walking environment to inform intervention programs. According to the literature, physical environment plays a greater role in walking behavior compared to other physical activity behavior determinants. Therefore, physical activity interventions should be considered to include the multifaceted (i.e., organism-situation-environment) characteristics of walking behavior. In addition, mobile walking application has evolved by incorporating behavioral change models into cutting-edge IT technologies. Gamification design is another direction of such evolution in the mobile applications. The main contents of the mobile walking applications are aimed to enhance the users’ behavioral competence, motivation, cues and opportunities, based on the health promotion theories and models. Also, there are an increasing number of applications that incorporate persuasive communication theories. Despite recent growth in mobile health applications, there are only a few tools for assessing quality of the walking. Multidisciplinary approach is encouraged to develop ecologically appropriate physical activity application contents.
