Abstract
Today, as people talk about ‘Posthuman beings’ and “the end of anthropology,” I believe it is important to ask, 'what makes human beings still human?', and 'what constitutes the humanness of human beings?' These questions seem to be relevant questions to ask when we consider the current situation in which different digital subjects have emerged thanks to the technological development of humanity. The process of dehumanization, on the other hand, has accelerated. Regardless of the question of whether the uniqueness of ourselves lies in the body or the mind, or in the body or symbols, the self of the modern Western consciousness has come to weigh too much. This article has originated in the view that the underlying understanding of human beings of our modern subject-centered civilization is closely connected with the Western Christian understanding of being and redemption (Christology). In an attempt to find an alternative to this understanding, this article tries to create a dialogue with East Asian Confucianism. However, the first thing that is to be mentioned here is that this article has the view that women in particular have lived their lives more genuinely embodying the Confucian spirit. For if the essence of the Confucian mind is said to follow the effort “to learn the low to reach the high” (下學而上達, “My studies lie low, and my penetration rises high”), women’s ordinary lives in traditional Confucian societies are the very examples of living such a Confucian way taking care of every miscellaneous thing of life. Therefore, this article will try to discover if there is a possibility of renewing the principle of subjectivity of our age from the reinterpretation of their lives. It seeks to discover if we can get a new principle of humanness through this dialogue, that is, the other principle of human civilization, the other humanness of ‘Posthuman.’This article takes 'the way of giving up one’s own way to follow that of others' (捨己從人), 'overcoming one’s self and returning to propriety'(克己復禮), and 'Seeking humanity and accomplishing sagehood' (求仁成聖) as the three cardinal principles of Confucian learning of 'Non-being'(無).
