Abstract

This work explored and analyzed the dialogue between Confucius and his disciple Zilu (子路) appearing in the Analects of Confucius, from the perspective of feedback. The analysis focused on examining what influence the feedback had had on learning for the growth of Zilu as a human being. Confucius’ feedback to Zilu was analyzed in terms of recognition, advice and evaluation. This study also analyzed how three factors interfering with feedback - truth trigger, relationship trigger and identity trigger - had worked in the process of feedback between two persons. These three triggers cause feedback recipients to undergo a psychological conflict. In the analysis, therefore, the author tried to identify the emotional responses of Confucius as well as Zilu. The Analects of Confucius gives a brief introduction to the master-and-disciple exchange between Confucius and Zilu. However, this work attempted to reconstruct a situation and background wherein their conversation had been taking place, from the author’s imagination but without deviating from the context of their interaction. The attempt of such reconstruction found that the conversation between Confucius and Zilu had been a process of genuine master-and-disciple feedback for ‘continuous growth.’
