미국 사회과 성립 과정에 대한 역사적 고찰 - 존스(Thomas J. Jones)의 햄프턴 학교 사회과를 중심으로 -

본 연구의 목적은 1916년 NEA 사회과 모형의 원형으로 알려져 있는 햄프턴 학교 사회과에 대한 분석을 통해 초기 사회과 이해를 위한 토대를 제공하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 햄프턴 학교의 교육과정 관련 자료 및 존스의 저서 등에 대한 분석을 통해 흑인과 인디언 대상의 중등 교육기관이었던 햄프턴 학교의 공민과가 존스의 주도로 사회과로 확대 개편되었음을 확인하였다. 햄프턴 학교 사회과 성립에 있어 존스는 다음과 같은 측면에서 결정적인 기여를 한 것으로 판단된다. 첫째, 교과 명칭으로 경제학 및 사회학을 포함할 수 있는 ‘사회과’를 최초로 사용하였다. 둘째, 대상 학년을 확대하고 충분한 수업 시수를 확보하였다. 셋째, 정치학/사회학/경제학 관련 교육 내용을 햄프턴 학생들의 필요에 맞추어 체계적으로 재조직하였다. 넷째, 수업 방법에 있어 통계적 기법과 같은 체계적인 탐구 방법을 도입하였다.
Abstract
This study is aimed to analyze the Social Studies in the Hampton Institute(Hampton Model) which is recognized as a prototype of Social Studies. According to previous researches for the Hampton Model, it was known to be created by Jones at 1905. But for the systematic understanding of Hampton Model, it is necessary to interconnect Jones’ ideas with the characteristics of the Hampton Institute. For this purpose, this study analyzes the books written by Jones and the documents published the Hampton Institute. Analysis of the books and documents give rise to the fact that the Hampton Institute had the course of Civics with special reference to the actual condition of Blacks and Indians. And Jones developed Social Studies in the Hampton Institute from Civics in the Hampton Institute. Jones’ contribution to the Hampton Model can be characterized as follows: using the term of ‘Scoial Studies’, securing school hours for Social Studies, reorganization of the subject matter for the needs of the student, using the census data. So it is necessary to consider the Hampton Model not as a Jones’ invention but as a Jones’ revision of the Civics in the Hampton Institute.
