Abstract

The present study was an attempt to examine the effect of social-cultural pressure on the perceived present and hoping body images between the dance (DMS) and general major students (GMS). A total 701 college female students (dance major(n)=431; general major(n)=270) who consented to the survey were selected from 11 different college. All participants were assessed on height and weight and a 17 scaled Contour Drawing Rating Scale (CDRS) extended by Shroff (2004). Present and hoping body images was measured in terms of 'actual body size','look-like body size', 'attractive body size' and 'ideal body size' which were commonly used in previous researches. MANOVA, ANOVA, effect size, and Pearson's r were applied to test the group differences between the selected body sizes and to estimate the correlations between them. It was found that 1) DMS preferred more lean body size than GMS in the three hoping ('look-like, attractive, and ideal' body size. 2) DMS perceived their body sizes in an order of 'look-like'<'attractive'<'ideal'<'present' body sizes, whereas GMS in an order of 'look-like'='attractive'='ideal'<'present'. 3) College girl students regardless of their majors preferred to have 'attractive' body size rather than 'ideal' one. 4)The more the students perceive their body sizes as fat, the more their body dissatisfactions are increased.
