신체상평정척도 기반 체형분류방법의 적절성

그동안 체형그림을 이용하여 신체상을 측정하기 위해 다양한 도구가 개발되어 활용되어 왔으나 실제 활용과정에서 적지 않은 문제(예: 기준설정 등)가 제기되어 왔다. 이 연구는 Bhuiyan 등이 신체상평정척도를 기초로 제안한 기준을 대한비만학회가 제안한 체질량지수(BMI)에 근거한 기준과 비교하여 체형분류방법의 적절성을 검증하는데 목적이 있다. 이 연구의 대상은 서울, 경기지역에 소재하고 있는 12개 대학에 재학 중인 무용학과 학생으로부터 표집된 431명이다. 선정된 신체상평정척도는 ‘Contour Drawing Rating Scale’(CDRS: Thompson & Gray,1995)에 기초하여 체형그림을 17개로 확장한 척도(Shroff, 2004)를 사용하였다. BMI 기준을 준거로 한 CDRS의 체형범주별 분류기준을 추정하기 위해 회귀분석(regression analysis)방법을 적용하였다. 그리고 BMI를 준거로 추정한 신체상 체형분류기준과 Bhuiyan 등이 제시한 체형분류기준 간의 일치도를 확인하기 위해 교차분석방법과 Spearman의 등위차상관계수(ρ)를 산출하였다. 분석결과 1)Bhuiyan 등이 제안한 CDRS의 체형분류기준은 BMI를 준거로 추정된 체형분류기준과 비교해 볼 때 전체적으로 낮다. 2) BMI를 준거로 분류된 체형범주별 기준과 Bhuiyan 등이 제시한 체형범주별 분류기준 간에는 통계적으로 유의한 상관계수(ρ＝.42)를 나타내고 있으나 두 기준이 공통적으로 평가하고 있는 정도는 전체적으로 17.3%에 불과하다. 이와 같은 결과는 Bhuiyan 등이 제안한 체형분류기준의 타당도는 매우 낮으며 한국 여자대학 무용전공자들에게 적용할 경우 이들의 체형을 과대하게 평가할 수 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 Bhuiyan 등이 제안한 기준을 한국 여자대학 무용전공자들에게 적용하는 데는 부적합하다고 판단된다.
Abstract
Throughout the years, various devices were developed and used to draw the body for evaluating body image. However, many problems, such as setting standards, existed in actually applying these processes. The purpose of this study is to compare the standards of BMI, which the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity has developed and is based upon the figure rating scale that Bhuiyan has introduced. Furthermore, evaluate the feasibility of this method. A total of 431 female dance major students were selected from 12 different universities across the Seoul and Gyeong-gi region to serve as subjects for this study. The selected figure rating scale was the expanded version of ‘Contour Drawing Rating Scale’(CDRS: Thompson & Gray,1995) to 17 body pictures and presented by Shroff in 2004. To estimate the body categorization of CDRS, which stands on the BMI standards, regression analysis was applied. Also, to check if the standard of the BMI weight classification index and the Bhuiyan’s weight classification index are highly consistent, cross tabulation and Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient (ρ) were calculated. The analysis results were the following. 1) The weight classification index of CDRS, which Bhuiyan had presented, was generally lower than the one based on BMI. 2) Correlation coefficient (ρ) was shown as .42 between the BMI based on weight classification index and the weight classification index that Bhuiyan had introduced. However, only 17.3% between these two indexes were consistent. The results implied that the feasibility of the weight classification index, which Bhuiyan had presented, was very low. This states that when this index is applied to female dance majors ,the figures of these students may be exaggerated. It was concluded that Bhuiyan’s weight classification index does not fit as a standard to apply to Korean female dance major students.
