Abstract

Body dissatisfaction has been conceptualized as the discrepancy between self and ideal body size estimates. The present study was an attempt to examine the relationship between BID and BMI by physical expression groups and to investigate at what body mass index (BMI) body image discrepancy (BID) was appeared in a college female physical expression major students. A total 535 samples were selected from dance (n=221), fashion model(n=85), and general majors (n=229) of seven different college lecture classes randomly selected. All participants were assessed on height and weight and Contour Drawing Rating Scale developed by Thompson and Gray (1995) and extended by Shroff (2004). ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis method were applied to examine overall group differences for each selected variables and to investigate the relationship between BID and BMI. There was no statistically significant difference in BMI among physical expression groups, However, significant difference was found in BID among groups. Fashion model and dance groups experienced BID at a lower BMI levels (17.12 and 18.0, respectively) which were below the criterion for normal weight (BMI=18.5). In contrast, general major group did not show BID until they were normal weight. Compared with fashion model and dance groups, general major group increased steeply in BID at smaller increased in BMI. The findings could have unhealthful implications for weight control behavior. The results suggest a closer consideration at physical expression groups and BID, and their relationship to body dissatisfaction and weight control. In order to establish proper weight control and balanced nutritional status for college female students, especially physical expression groups, educational interventions should address characteristics of eating behaviors.
