Abstract
The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review about the validity issues of physical fitness tests for children. In addition, it was to introduce a new concept and structure of the physical literacy as an alternative model for the school-based physical fitness and physical activity assessments. As a background of currently employed physical fitness tests for children, there are lacks of validity and reliability evidences as well as scientific evidences to set the norm- and criterion-referenced standards of physical fitness levels based on health benefits. Even though physical fitness is not a single level, but multi-facet components, it has been treated as a dichotomous choice, which is either performance-related or health-related physical fitness test. Nevertheless, physical fitness should be understood as a part of comprehensive physical ability including a basic body movement, physical activity, sport skills, and health in a life-long period. Furthermore, physical literacy should be considered in the goal achievement of the sport professionalism and school-based physical education, and it’s values and meaningness is emphasized through the individual life course.
