Abstract

Kwon Geun argued over the principles of composition of the Great Learning Chapters's Minor Text system, using two controversial issues in the Great Learning Chapters as the subject of discussion. The arguments consist of arguments in favor of the independence of the "Chapter on Devotion" of the Great Learning Chapters and the sentence structure of the Minor Text. The Minor Text of the Great Learning Chapters consists of 10 chapters. Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 are comments on the Major Text (經文), and 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are interpretations of each of the Eight Categories (八條目). If you analyze the Minor Text system of Chapters 5 to 10, which interpret the Eight Categories, most of chapters show the same pattern in its organization and the structure of sentences, but there are still some exceptions in the form. First, Chapter 6 of Minor Text, Chapter on Devotion, forms an independent chapter with the single article of Devotion (誠意), unlike other chapters that form one chapter by grouping two articles such as Moral Culture (修身) and Wise Government of one's family (齊家). Second, the conclusion of Chapter 8 and the introduction of Chapter 9 of the Minor Text show a different sentence structure from other chapters. By arguing why the Minor Text is composed in deformed forms, Kwon Geun tried to clarify the rationality of the Great Learning Chapters system.
