사회지배성향과 미디어 노출이 청소년의 제노포비아에 미치는 영향 : 이방인에 대한 공감의 매개효과

본 연구는 사회지배성향과 미디어 노출이 청소년의 제노포비아(이방인 혐오)에 미치는 영향력을 규명하고, 사회지배성향ㆍ미디어 노출과 제노포비아 간 관계에서 이방인에 대한 공감의 매개효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울ㆍ경기도의 중ㆍ고등학생을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 410명의 자료를 분석에 사용하였으며, 매개효과를 확인하고자 바론과 케니(Baron & Kenny, 1986)의 3단계 검증 절차 및 PROCESS Macro 3.3의 부트스트래핑(bootstrapping) 방법을 적용하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회지배성향은 청소년의 제노포비아에 정적(+)으로 유의하였다. 둘째, 이방인 관련 긍정적 미디어 노출은 제노포비아를 완화한 반면, 부정적 미디어 노출은 제노포비아를 심화시키는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 사회지배성향이 제노포비아에 미치는 영향에서 이방인에 대한 공감의 부분매개효과를 검증하였다. 이방인 관련 긍정적 미디어 노출과 제노포비아 간 관계에서 이방인에 대한 공감의 완전매개효과가 검증된 반면, 부정적 미디어 노출과 제노포비아 간 관계에서 공감의 매개효과는 유의미하지 않게 나타났다. 본 연구는 사회지배성향 극복을 위한 가치교육의 확대와 부정적 미디어 노출로 인한 제노포비아 해소를 위해 미디어 리터러시 교육의 강화를 제안한다. 또한 긍정적 미디어 노출의 효과성을 강조하면서도 이방인에 대한 공감 교육을 확대할 필요성을 제기한다. 매개효과 검증 결과는 앞으로의 다문화 공감 교육이 이방인을 포용하는 것뿐만 아니라 공감의 한계에 대한 문제까지 폭넓게 다루어야 함을 시사한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of social dominance orientation and media exposure on adolescents’ xenophobia and to verify the mediating effect of empathy towards strangers in these relationships. Participants consisted of 410 middle and high school students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. To verify the mediating effect, the three analysis steps approach by Baron and Kenny (1986) were adopted together with bootstrapping. The findings are as follows: First, the social dominance orientation had a positive effect on xenophobia. Second, positive portrayal of strangers from media exposure mitigated xenophobia while negative media exposure exacerbated it. Third, the relationship between social dominance orientation and xenophobia showed a partial mediating effect on empathy towards strangers. The positive media exposure and xenophobia demonstrated a complete mediation, whereas the negative media exposure had no significant mediating effect on empathy towards strangers. Based upon the above findings, this study suggests value education on encouraging conscience and justice in order to overcome xenophobia from social dominance orientation. With regards to negative media exposure, incorporating multicultural education with media literacy course is suggested. It is important not only to emphasize the effectiveness of positive media exposure, but also to heighten the level of empathy towards strangers. This study indicates that multicultural empathy education should take into account not only the issue of understanding and empathizing strangers but also the issue of distortion and exaggeration of empathy.
