Abstract
This study aims to analyze the types and presentation methods of "social issues" featured in elementary social studies textbooks and to suggest directions for enhancing issue-centered learning. Based on the 2022 revised Korean social studies curriculum, 24 textbooks for grades 3 and 4 were examined. The analysis focused on the types of social issues, their contents, presentation forms, and instructional approaches, and methods for referencing relevant previous studies. The findings are as follows: First, the most frequently presented social issues were multiculturalism and cultural diversity, environmental problems, population issues, and digitalization. In semesters where the curriculum did not explicitly include social issues in achievement standards, related content was rarely presented. Second, social issues were most commonly introduced through inquiry-based activities, while their presence in the main texts was relatively limited. Third, the most frequent activity types were content comprehension and investigative inquiry, followed by expression, problem-solving, and participation. However, activities involving discussion, debate, or empathy were rarely observed. Fourth, the content and examples of social issues were often limited to domestic cases or merely repeated what was stated in the curriculum guide. Based on these findings, this study suggests diversifying the types and instructional methods of social issues in textbook content and reinforcing the original intent of issue-centered learning in overall social studies education.
