Abstract
This study investigates, through textual analysis, how she (射)—originally a physical technique and tool for hunting and warfare—was appropriated and transformed into a realm of li (禮, ritual propriety) and xiuyang (修養, self-cultivation). In early China, archery served as a ritual act for preparing sacrificial offerings and soon developed into a political mechanism for sustaining hierarchy and authority within the community. It further became established as a form of social li (禮) embodying aristocratic dignity and order, thereby reproducing symbolic capital through bodily practice. Confucius (孔子) endowed such formalistic ritual practice with the ethical ideal of ren (仁, humaneness), emphasizing that li (禮) should not remain in external regulation but lead to moral action grounded in inner sincerity (cheng 誠) and harmony (he 和). The interpretation of archery found in the “She Yi” (射義) chapter of the Liji (禮記) continues this perspective, presenting archery as a means of observing virtue (guande 觀德) and pursuing moral self-perfection through posture, attitude, and intention. In the Song dynasty, Cheng Yi (程伊川) and Zhu Xi (朱子) deepened this tradition by distinguishing ritual archery (yeshe 禮射) from martial archery (wushe 武射), while advocating the unity of rectifying the mind (xinzheng 心正) and hitting the target (dezhong 的中) as a method of moral cultivation. In particular, the attitude of fanqiuzhiji (反求諸己, “seeking the cause within oneself”) rendered even failure in archery a moment of ethical reflection, thereby completing archery’s transformation into a moral and self-cultivating practice grounded in embodied action. In conclusion, she (射) developed from an ancient ritual-political instrument into an effective medium of Neo-Confucian xin-xing xiuyang (心性修養, cultivation of mind and nature) through the reinterpretations of Confucius and Song dynasty thinkers. By systematically examining this ideological transformation, the present study reorients the philosophical foundation of traditional East Asian archery discourse and expands its contemporary significance in the study of Chinese ritual theory and virtue ethics.
