Abstract

Smart work, as a relatively new arrangement, has become a part of daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, many organizations are still experiencing conflicts between old and new ways of working, confusion about the transition to smart work, technical and institutional challenges, etc. Therefore, to help assuage these issues, it is crucial to understand how smart work changes intra-organizational communication and, in turn, productivity. In that sense, this study aims to present a theoretical framework explaining the relationship between smart work arrangements and intra-organizational communication. Specifically, the theoretical framework was first derived from the existing literature, which suggests the importance of formalization and organizational culture as structural factors as well as of relationships among organizational members. Then, the framework was expanded by incorporating the characteristics of smart work, including space, techniques, and communication channels.
