Abstract

This qualitative study investigated novice counselors’s experiences of changes in self-efficacy through supervision. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight counselors who had experienced supervision, and additional field materials were collected. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, which emphasizes the interpretation of participants’ individual experiences, was adopted. The main findings are follows: Supervision itself, along with the supervisor’s belief in the counselor’s ability and effort, enhances the supervisee’s confidence. As counselors trust their supervisors, their mastery experiences are facilitated, and the supervisor’s feedback increases self-awareness, self-acceptance, and a sense of control. Supervisors can also help supervisees develop their self-efficacy by providing clear guidance and emotional support. The discussion emphasizes the importance of the availability of supervision and relational efficacy beliefs, suggesting the need for a supportive institutional environment for regular supervision.
