西學과 近代意識 - 서학 수용과 근대의식의 단초 -

초록
본고는 西學의 수용과정에서 일어난 근대의식을 다루고 있다. 100년 가깝게 종교적 갈등을 겪는 가운데 親西의 입장에 선 믿는 이들은 새로운 의식의 흐름을 경험하게 된다. 이 의식의 흐름은 문화적 갈등을 내면적으로 극복하는 데서 나타났다. 이 새로운 意識의 흐름이 바로 近代意識을 성격짓고 있다. 서구문화의 유입에 따른 변혁기에 서학을 수용하는 입장에 서있던 사람들은 누구보다 앞서 그 갈등의 폭을 크게 체험하며 도전하고 혹독한 대가를 치루어야 했다. 그러나 그들의 순교는 유교사회 안에서 近代的 社會意識을 여는데 기여하였다고 여겨진다. 그렇다면 우리는 그들이 갖고 있었던 근대의식의 단초가 무엇이며 그 한계가 어떤 것인지 살필 필요가 있다.필자는 잔반과 중인 그리고 여성의 새로운 사회적 역할, 계급과 계층을 넘어선 평등한 인격적인 교류, 죽음을 통해 저항한 개인의 자유의식, 민중문화 의식은 서학의 수용과 함께 일어난 근대의식으로 보고 있다. 로크가 자연적인 권리로서 生命, 自由, 財産의 權利를 不可讓渡의 天賦人權으로 언급했다면 천주교인들은 만남을 통해서 平等을, 나눔을 통해서 재산의 권리를, 죽음을 통한 저항 가운데 생명과 자유의 권한을 고백했다고 할 수 있다. 이들은 제도에 의한 공동체가 아니라 자유로운 신념에 의한 공동체 안에서 이러한 의식을 성숙시킬 수 있었다고 본다.따라서 이 연구는 실증적인 시각에서 근대 의식을 접근하려고 하는 것이 아니라 "의식의 흐름(the stream of consciousness)"을 해석하여 그 안에 내재된 의식의 현대적 의미와 가치를 파악하려고 하는 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper I examine modern consciousness that happened in the accommodating process of Christianity. From cultural conflict almost during one century the believers have experienced new consciousness. The new stream of consciousness appeared on the point, where they overcome cultural conflict. This new stream of consciousness characterized modern consciousness.In reforming period of influx of Western culture the people who were the positive to the western culture, should experience severe conflicts and pay the high price. However their martyrdom, I think, contributed to enlighten a modern social consciousness within Confucian society. Then we need to search meaning and limits modern consciousness that they had.In my opinion, it was modern consciousness and accommodation of Christianity that accompanied new social role of shunned upper class and woman, respecting communication across the social ranks, individual resisting consciousness of Liberty taking death, sensibility of popular culture.While John Locke referred life, freedom and rights of property to the natural human rights, Korean Christian confessed equality in religious congregation, rights of property in sharing, and rights of life and liberty in the resistance. They could ripen this consciousness not because of official assembly, but spontaneous community.Consequently, this research approaches modern consciousness not by the way of positivism. Instead, it attempts to grasp modern meaning and value of the immanent consciousness through interpretation of "the stream of consciousness".
