Abstract
The Study of Rites, as advocated by a particular branch by the School of Kiho, is founded on the spirit of Dohak and is observed through the spirit of the politics of rite, the secession of Korean Dohak tradition, the strict mental self discipline, and the rule of men of virtue. First, the School of Kiho emphasized the teaching of rites and tried to practice the politics of rite. The School of Kiho tried to succeed the orthodoxy of Korean Dohak to promote the humane and ethical politics through Ye (ethics), not law. Second, the School focused on Sohak(小學), which teaches in detail disciplinary methods by emphasizing strict mental self discipline by means of Ye. Third, the School protested the unrighteousness invasion of foreigners by advocating the righteous rule of men of virtue while opposing the tyrannical rule of despots: the Chunchu Spirit. On the other hand, the School of Kiho established a contemporary subject of ethics based upon a variety of historical research and attempted to develop a revisedsubject of ethics by complementing [family rites of Jusi]. In addition, the School systematically reformed Chong pup (doctrine) to ensure general public access and practice, as well as actively participated in various issues of royal rite to establish a code of ethics. The study of the rites by the School of Kiho recognized Chong pup as the value of the study of human nature and attempted to manage family matters by establishing an order based on the principle of intimating father and mother; this effort was meant to restore Korean society which was ruined by the Japanese (1592) and Chung Dynasty (1627, 1636) invasions. With such an effort, the School stressed Ye-based politics to establisha society which respects humanity. Such a socio-political philosophy was the critical guideline for social and political change during the Lee Dynasty, after the seventeenth century.
