Abstract

This dissertation aims to clarify Lu Jiuyuan's theory of heresy. It was the heresy inside of Confucianism that Lu mainly criticized, instead of Buddhism and Taoism. Lu insists that the heresy inside of Confucianism is influenced by Laozi and thus empahsizes Li(禮) and social system. Lu classifies the early Confucianism into three types. The first type is orthodoxy which is passed down by Yanzi⋅Cengzi⋅Mengzi. The second type is represented by Zixia⋅Zizhang⋅Gaozi. It's distinctive feature is emphasis on Li(禮) instead of one's spontaneity. The third type is represented by Xunzi who regards social system as important. According to Lu, the three types of early Confucianism repeat in the period of Neo-Confucianism. The third type regains influence on the Confucian through Wang Anshi who leads the Reformists. While Cheng-zhu who lead the Conservative faction against the Reformists succeed to the second type. And Lu avers he is the successor of orthodoxy. Excepting the orthodoxy, the two other types think the basis of moral conducts is not one's spontaneity but Li(禮) and social system.
