Abstract

Lu Zujian a well-known scholar, is considered as one of the South-east Three sages. Though he had conducted the most vigorous ideological exchanges with Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan, who were the most distinguished scholars of natural sciences and practical ethics, the research on Lu Zujian is rather poor. Based on this understanding, this paper intends to review his ideological system in general. The fact that Lu Zujian managed to establish an original ideology of his own by seeking an ideological convergence between those of Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan from their controversy regarding Temple of E-Hu is notable. Especially, the Theory of Moral Self-cultivation can offer us a glimpse into eclectic and integral aspects of his independently established ideology in general. This article not only aims to examine Lu Zujian’s ideology in general, but will also review ideological disputation which was demonstrated in the process of his academic exchange with Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan. The study presents Lu Zujian’s scholarly attitude and how he came to obtain a utilitarian view. Furthermore, this research will be able to function as a significant research material in order to apprehend the ideological trend of those times.
