Abstract

This article examines the impact on health coverage by analyzing medical aid for migrant workers in Singapore’s civil society. The encounter in the name of charity reconstructs migrant workers and residents as intimate others in the field of medical aid, making them recognize each other as new beings. This recognition contributes to changes in health care policy and drives the creation of a social safety net for migrant workers. Advocacy and solidarity urge policy change with a structural awareness of health coverage and a critical approach. This approach makes interesting connections to radical imaginations of equality and redistribution of resources in Singapore. This article shows that the achievements of civil society groups’ medical aid are not only changing health coverage policies, but also helping Singapore society learn how to live with migrant workers and critically imagine alternatives.
