Abstract
This article examines ASEAN's response to pressing issues within and outside of ASEAN in 2024, focusing on the outcomes of the ASEAN Summit and related meetings. In 2024, ASEAN, under the leadership of the risk-averse chair, Lao PDR, attempted to restore its relevance by focusing on discussions within safer and more assured areas of community building. As a result, tangible progress was made within the development of the ASEAN Community Vision post-2025 and the ASEAN Economic Community, such as the expansion of FTAs, sustainable agriculture and supply chain connectivity, still there were limited attempts to find an exit on the South China Sea and the Myanmar crisis. The inability to reconcile the conflicting positions of the United States and its like-minded countries versus China and Russia resulted in the failure of the East Asia Summit (EAS) to produce a joint statement, and differences in geopolitical calculations among member states have led to widespread skepticism about the role and function of ASEAN. Skepticism about its relevance has been intensified as key members have competitively pursued membership in other multilateral organizations such as BRICS and OECD. In the latest strategic environment with the new variable of Trump's return, this paper argues that ASEAN's relevance in the international community will become even more obscure if ASEAN, led by Malaysia in 2025, fails to make progress in resolving the pending issues.
