Abstract

This paper surveys the historicality and religious traditionalism in the Three Great Sacred Sites in contemporary Myanmar Buddhism. These sites are Shwedagon Pagoda Complex in Yangon, Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda a complex in Mon district, and Mahamuni Temple in Mandalay. These three Great Sacred sites are considered the oldest Buddhist sacred sites in Myanmar, which were built for enshrining the Buddha's sacred relics handed down from the time of Sakyamuni Buddha who lived in the 6th century BCE in India. However, the historicality of these sites may not reflect true history; they might have been created as new Buddhist sacred sites by the later Myanmar Buddhists from the sixteenth century to the British colonial Period for cultural conservatism under political and social changes. Among the remaining conservative traditionalism in these Buddhist sites, the most important are the gendered spaces and rituals in the sacred places during pilgrimage. Such gendered pilgrimage brings out the religious marginalization of ordinary female Buddhists, who could not but prefer the Nat faith for blessing to the achievement of the sincere Buddhist faith. For the future management and development of these Three Great Sacred Sites, it is important to recognize their accurate historicity and the cultural traditional points between localism and international Buddhism.
