이 글은 미얀마 라카인주 므락우 지역의 다양한 유산이 어떻게 서로 밀접하게 연결되어 있으며, 이 연결이 불교문화의 지속적인 전승에 어떤 역할을 하는지에 대해 심도 깊게 분석한다. 특히 미얀마 문화유산 디지털 관리시스템(MCHMS)에 기록된 라카인주 므락우의 상세목록(Inventory) 분석을 통해, 유산 간의 상호작용이 미얀마의 불교문화를 어떻게 풍부하게 하고 있는지를 구체적으로 살펴본다. 특히 다양한 공덕 행위와 관련된 무형유산이 미얀마 불교 사회의 유지와 강화에 핵심적인 역할을 함을 밝혀내며, 이는 미얀마인들의 의례 수행 시 불교적 믿음과 토속적인 상징이 어떻게 혼합되는지 이해하는 데 중요한 통찰을 제공한다. 또한 불교와 낫 정령 신앙의 두 믿음이 어떻게 서로 보완하고 강화하는지를 드러내며, 이러한 상호연결성이 므락우 지역의 불교문화를 종교적 실천을 넘어 지역 사회의 정체성과 전통을 유지하는 데 기여하는 방식을 분석한다. 이 연구를 통해 미얀마 므락우 지역의 문화적 정체성과 유산의 중요성을 새롭게 조명하는 기회를 제공하며, 불교 전통의 문화적 생명력을 유지하고 강화할 수 있는 이유를 유산 간의 친연성과 지속적 상호작용의 결과로 해석한다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes how various heritages in the Mrauk-U region of Rakhine State, Myanmar, are closely interconnected and how these connections play a part in the continuous transmission of Buddhist culture. It specifically examines the detailed inventory of Rakhine State's Mrauk-U as recorded in the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Management System (MCHMS) to concretely explore how the interactions between heritages enrich the Buddhist culture of Myanmar. The paper reveals the crucial role that diverse acts of merit and related intangible cultural heritages play in the maintenance and strengthening of the Burmese Buddhist community, providing critical insights into how Buddhist beliefs and indigenous symbols blend during the ritual practices of the Burmese people. It also uncovers how the beliefs in Buddhism and the Nat spirit faith complement and strengthen each other, analyzing how this interconnectedness contributes to sustaining the Buddhist culture of the Mrauk-U region beyond mere religious practices, thereby maintaining the community's identity and traditions. Through this research, the paper offers a fresh perspective on the cultural identity and significance of heritage in the Mrauk-U region of Myanmar, interpreting the maintenance and enhancement of the cultural vitality of Buddhist traditions as a result of the affinity and continuous interaction between heritages.
