Abstract
This research aims to show how Shwedagon Pagoda, located in spatially open and culturally diverse Yangon, was culturally transformed via conflict and integration between Myanmar tradition and colonial/modern practices through historic and cultural situations, which is reflected within the area of Shwedagon Pagoda, and sheds light on the application of Pagoda by Burmese, in accordance with historic and cultural context. As the importance of the space of Shwedagon grows, consumption and reproduction of this space are carried out by various subjects. Burmese monarch of the ancient era showed off their power and legitimacy by occupying Pagoda, which was used as military base under British colonial rule while simultaneously becoming ‘a place for spiritual resistance' for Burmese. After independence, during the period of military rule(dictatorship), military authority practiced political engineering to use the space for political purposes. the military had a conflict with democratization forces in Shwedagon pagoda. and the people of Myanmar against the military junta used pagoda's space as a place of resistance. As the space of Shwedagon Pagoda has also been competing and producing various meanings for the space. the meaning of the space has changed according to Myanmar's historic and cultural context. This research focuses on the fact that the space of Shwedagon Pagoda has been not only a religious space, but also a political space that has been changed in historic and cultural context by various forces and subjects. and we can consider the way Myanmar people have formed their culture by looking into the space of Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar's historic and cultural context. through burmese practice and representation, Shwedagon Pagoda will be imaged as basis of Myanmar identity. This is how the people of Myanmar create their own culture.
