생명윤리와 포스트휴머니즘: 포스트휴먼의 존엄성에 관한 논쟁을 중심으로

과학기술의 발전은 한편으로 생명윤리의 등장배경이며, 다른 한편으로 생명윤리에 대한 도전이다. 최근의 과학기술은 나노공학, 생명공학, 정보통신기술, 인지과학(NBIC) 등이 결합하면서 과거의 인간이 경험하지 못한 새로운 영역을 열고 있다. 트랜스휴머니즘은 이러한 첨단 과학기술을 이용해서 인간의 능력향상을 추구하는 사상이다. 트랜스휴머니즘은 인간의 근본적 조건인 노화, 질병 등을 극복하는 것뿐 아니라 육체적 정신적 능력을 강화함으로써 새로운 인간 종인 포스트휴먼에 이르는 것을 목표로 한다. 따라서 트랜스휴머니즘, 혹은 포스트휴머니즘은 근대 이후의 인간 존엄성 사상에 근본적인 의문을 제기하며, 인간 존엄성이나 생명의 존엄성에 근거한 생명윤리에 대한 반성을 요구한다. 포스트휴먼은 존엄성을 갖는가? 또는 포스트휴먼은 인간 존엄성을 증진하는가, 훼손하는가? 인간과 포스트휴먼이 공유할 수 있는 인간 존엄성의 근거가 있는가, 있다면 무엇인가? 본 논문은 트랜스휴머니즘이 주장하는 포스트휴먼의 존엄성에 대해 어떤 비판이 있는지 살펴보고, 이들 비판이 갖는 한계를 지적하면서, 포스트휴먼이 존엄성을 가질 수 있는 조건을 밝히려고 한다(2장, 3장). 인간 존엄성을 통해서 가능한 도덕적 지위의 인정이 인간에게 공통된 속성에서 기인한다면, 그 속성은 도덕적 능력, 즉 정의감과 선의 개념을 형성할 능력이며(4장), 이런 점에서 포스트휴먼도 존엄성을 가질 수 있지만, 그것은 인간과 포스트휴먼이 ‘선의 개념’을 공유할 때뿐이라고 주장할 것이다. 그리고 이 ‘선의 개념’의 궁극적 한계는 인간의 유한성에 있으며, 이 유한성의 본질은 ‘죽음’이라고 주장할 것이다(5장).
Abstract
Development of science and technology is, on the one hand, background of the emergence of bioethics, on the other hand a challenge for bioethics. Latest nano-technology, biotechnology, information technology, and cognitive science (NBIC) and a combination of these technologies is opening a new area which human has not been experience past. Trans-humanism is a thought movement which is seeking to improve the ability of human by using these cutting-edge science and technology. Trans-humanism is aiming to overcome aging, illness that are the fundamental condition of human, as well as to reach post-human, or new human species. Thus, trans-humanism, or post-humanism is raising a fundamental question about the notion of human dignity, requires a radical reflection to bioethics based on human dignity and the sanctity of life. Does the post-human have the dignity? Is post-human to promote human dignity, or do damage to human dignity? Do human and post-human share fundamental sources of human dignity in common, then what they are? In this paper, I will look through the position of the trans-humanist around the dignity of post-human and arguments against those position, then point out the conditions that a post-human can have the dignity.(Chapter2, Chapter3) Recognition of moral status which is possible through human dignity is due to common human attributes, then the attributes are moral capacities, that is a sense of justice and a capacity for a conception of the good.(Chapter4). I will argue, thanks to these capacities, post-human can have dignity, but only in that case which human and post-human share ‘a concept of good’in common. And I will argue the final limitation of this ‘concept of the good’ is in human finitude, whose core is ‘death’(Chapter5).
