보생명과 움벨트 개념 탐색: 환경 교육의 관점에서

이 글은 자기와 주변 세계의 관계를 내포하고 있는 개념어인 보생명과 움벨트 개념을 탐색하였다. 환경이라는 용어는 자기와 주변 세계의 관계를 내포하지 않아서 항상 ‘친’혹은 ‘자기’와 같은 수식어를 필요로 한다. 움벨트와 보생명 개념은 각각 유기체의 고유의 세계와 개체 생명을 생명이게 하는 세계라는 의미이다. 두 개념은 공통적으로 유기체와 주변 세계와의 관계가 상보적이며 하나의 전체를 이룬다는 점을 의미하므로 나와 환경과의 관계를 적극적으로 내포하고 있다. 움벨트 개념은 보생명 개념에서 깊이 해명하지 않은 주체적인 세계를 주로 다룬다는 점에서 보생명론을 보완하는 데 있어서 유용하다. 한편 낱생명의 움벨트는 보생명과 다르게 해당 낱생명의 생존에 반드시 필요한 요소들을 모두 포섭하고 있지 않다. 따라서 기후 변화와 같이 인류가 공동으로 진단하고 대처해야 할 사안에 대해서 이해 기준과 행동 지침을 정하려면 인간 공동의 모형인 현대 과학에서 파악한 보생명의 모습에도 주목해야 한다. 두 개념은 우리에게 지속가능성 과학에 대한 학습, 낱생명의 움벨트 이해와 존중, 공동 움벨트를 위한 학습과 소통 등 여러 가지 함의를 제공한다. 이러한 점을 바탕으로 이 글은 우리가 관행적으로 환경이라 부르던 대상을 보생명으로 부르기를 제안하였다.
Abstract
This paper explored the concepts of co-life and umwelt which connote the relationship between self and the surrounding world. The term ‘environment’ always needs modifiers such as ‘pro’ or ‘self’ since it does not connote the relationship between self and the surrounding world. The concepts of umwelt and co-life suggest the distinct world where an organism exist and the world that makes an individual life within it exist as a life, respectively. The two concepts share the meaning that an organism and the surrounding world are in complementary relations, and consist of a whole, thus naturally connote the relationship between self and the environment. The idea of umwelt can complement the co-life theory usefully in that it involves the subjective world which is not explicated by the idea of co-life. Meanwhile, the umwelt of an individual life does not embrace all the aspects necessitated for the survival of that life. Therefore, to determine the criteria for understanding and action guidelines regarding the matters that require the diagnosis and the response that the mankind should make, e.g. climate change, attention should be paid to the features of co-life grasped by the modern science which itself is a model agreed by the mankind. The two concepts provide us with various implications such as learning about sustainability science, an individual life’s understanding about and respect for co-life, and learning and communication towards a shared umwelt. Based on these, the paper proposes to use the term ‘co-life’ in place of the conventionally-used word ‘environment’.
