자본주의 소비문화에서 비롯한 생태위기 억제와 극복을 위한 ‘자발적 소박함’의 덕

오늘날 우리는 여러 가지 위기에 직면해 있다. 하지만 이러한 위기의 중심에는 환경위기 혹은 생태위기가 자리하고 있다. 이러한 환경위기의 근원으로는 과학기술 문명의 급격한 발전을 비롯해 서양의 철학적이고 종교적인 전통 등이 주목을 받기도 한다. 그러나 우리는 이러한 위기의 근원으로 자본주의와 같은 제도나 이에 수반하는 소비주의 등도 주목해볼 필요가 있다. 그래서 나는 이 글에서 과학기술을 산업화한 자본권력과 그것에서 비롯되는 환경문제 그리고 그것을 억제하기 위한 한 방안으로서의 몇 가지 덕에 대한 논의, 특히 자발적 소박함의 덕에 대한 논의에 대해 집중 검토한다. 이를 위해 먼저 자본주의 소비사회 혹은 소비주의 문제를 간략하게 살핀다. 그런데 벤츠에 의하면 소비주의는 단순히 물건을 소비하는 것을 말하는 것이 아니라, 사회가 소비를 극대화하고 제한 없이 소비해야 한다는 이데올로기라는 것이다. 이러한 소비주의는 환경을 파괴하고, 가난한 사람들에게 피해를 끼치며, 산업사회의 사람들에게 해를 입힌다. 하지만 이는 검약, 감사, 절제 등등과 같은 몇 가지 전통적인 덕들을 발휘함으로써 억제되리라는 것이다. 그러나 환경뿐만 아니라 인간에게도 여러 가지 피해를 입히는 그 자체 목적으로 추구되는 제한되지 않는 소비주의는 자발적 소박함이라는 덕의 발휘를 통해 가장 잘 억제 혹은 극복되리라 생각된다. 그래서 나는 여기에서 자발적 소박함의 삶이라는 것이 무엇인지, 그리고 그것이 어떻게 덕이 되는 것인지 그리고 구체적인 현실에서 그러한 덕이 어떻게 실현 가능한지를 몇몇 학자들의 논의를 통해 타진하고 검토한다.
Abstract
These days, we are faced with multiple crises. But the environmental and ecological crisis is at the center of these crises. And that crisis is commonly said to originate from the rapid advance of science and technology, the philosophical or religious tradition in the West, and so on. But we need to notice that the capitalistic system and its accompanying consumerism is an important cause of that crisis as well. For this purpose, this study focuses on some virtues, particularly the virtue of voluntary simplicity as the way to cope with ecological crisis based on the close relation between capitalism and scientific technology. First, I generally examine the problems of consumer-capitalist society. Consumerism does not simply consist in the consumption of goods and services; rather, it is an ideology claiming that society should maximize consumption, and pursue consumption without limit. According to Peter Wenz, such a consumerism harms the environment, poor people and industrial people, but we can hope that it can be inhibited and got over by some traditional virtues like frugality, appreciation, temperance, etc. Then, I specifically claim that the virtue of voluntary simplicity is the best method to inhibit and cope with those consumeristic problems. So by referring to the works of some philosophers, I examine what is the virtue of simplicity, why simplicity is a virtue, and how it can be realized specifically in the real world.
