This article analyzes diaries and memoirs of one mill owning peasant(1923-1994), who has been born and died in Changpyeong-ri located in Jeollabuk-do. His records are very abundant in descriptions of violent affairs that he has performed, observed or heard during his lifetime. Based on his personal records, this article reveals what has been happening in the internal aspects of violence performers, explains what social effects have been gained from those abrupt actions, and examines how his village community and state organization have coped with these wild peasants. They presents vivid picture of violence in everyday-life sceneries, never fully scrutinized before. The study can be summarized into three points. First, contrary to the view that violence is deeply embedded in social relations, a society maintains itself by pushing violence out of itself in spite of some member's ceaseless endeavors to recourse to violent measures. Second, such a character of violence - continuously expelled but frequently mobilized - reflects centrifugal force of peasantry from centralized state control, so legal domination of modernizing state is inevitably dispersed, fragmented and inhomogeneous in nature. Third, in order to manage these states of affairs, incompetent and corrupted state power makes rather blank space of legal domination (namely, anomie) instead of sticking to the strict administration of legal justice, but this has some effectiveness to govern the incontrollable peasants. We can conceptualize this mechanism as price inflation of informal arbitration competency.
