The formation of anti-communist state and the change of local community - Focused on the document of Korean War period in "Wolpayugo"

Based on Wolpayugo, a memoir of a local resident, who has lived in Imsil, Jeollabuk-do, this paper examines the change of local community under the anti-communist state formation process in Korea during the Korean War period. This paper aims to analyse two questions. The one is how the local community is disorganized and reorganized by the state power in the course of modern state building. The other is what strategies can be chosen by local residents for survival under the violence of war. The outcomes of this paper can be summarized into three points. First, the Korean War of Imsil has started from 'the 2.26 incident' in 1948. From this incident, the conflict and the clash between the left and the right forces has come to the surface in Imsil area. Second, as the control of the state power on local community has been strengthened, local residents have to prove themselves to be healthy people of anti-communist state. The best way of doing it has been to fight against the enemy, the communist. Third, through the war and violence, the conventional discipline of local community has been rapidly dismantled, and the local society has assimilated into the vertical system of the state apparatus. This governing system has been the basis of the mobilization system for the modernization of Korea.
