Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the curvilinear effects of job stress on women flight attendant’s innovative behavior as well as the moderating effects of positive psychological capital in the relationship between job stress and women flight attendant’s innovative behaviors. Additionally, this study investigates the level of job stress of women flight attendant by developing the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute, part of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. To this end, we conducted a survey of 404 flight attendants in the airplane industry, and analyzed data collected from 258 women flight attendants, except unreliable responses. First, compared to reference value of occupational stress for female in Korea, women flight attendants are under a lot of stress, such as job demand, interpersonal conflict, Job insecurity, organizational system, occupational climate. But, they receive a low level of stress, such as job control. Second, As a result of a hierarchical regression analysis to confirm main effects, it is found that job stress has inverted U-shape effects on women flight attendant's innovative behavior. In other words, job stress has positively impact on women flight attendant's innovative behavior at optimum level, but, as a result of arising their's cognitive rigidity at high level of job stress, job stress has negative impact on women flight attendant's innovative behavior. Also, it is found that the moderating role of positive psychological capital has significantly effect in the relationship between job stress and women flight attendant's innovative behavior. Positive psychological capital moderates the relationship between job stress and innovative behavior in that the relationship is stronger for positive psychological capital on high or medium level, and at the low level of positive psychological capital, job stress has negative impact on women flight attendant's innovative behavior. We discussed research implications and suggested future research directions.
