Abstract

The COVID-19 has affected various areas all over the world. The airlines industry is one of the most damaged industries during the pandemic. The Border shutdown and lockdown to prevent the COVID-19 have restricted air travel. Also, air travel demand has dramatically decreased because travelers have concerns about the COVID-19. The airlines’ operations also collapsed. The COVID-19 pandemic has a greater and deeper impact on the airlines industry than prior crises. This research sheds light on the impact of the COVID-19 on airfare under such a decline in both demand and supply. This research also examines the impact of changes in passenger demand and cargo demand. I used the international flights data of Korean Air and the routes data that depart from or arrive at the airports in the Republic of Korea. Using 18,669 samples from 102 routes during March 2020 and December 2020, all three hypotheses were supported. The empirical analysis supports that the spread of COVID-19 has a positive impact on the increase in international airfare. This is because passengers who go abroad under the current pandemic are more likely essential and/or business purpose travelers, which means they are less sensitive to the price. In addition to this, this research examines the moderating effects of the changes in the passenger demand and cargo demand on the main effect that the spread of COVID-19 increases the international airfare. Regarding the passenger demand, it is also discovered that the smaller degree of the decrease in the passenger demand ― in the hypothesis and the empirical model, it is expressed as the increase in the passenger demand strengthens the main effect ― strengthens the positive impact of the spread COVID-19 on the airfare. On the contrary, the alteration in cargo demand can weaken the main relationship. This result implies that the airlines’ strategic renewal (focusing more on the cargo market) to minimize the damage due to COVID-19 can affect the price (airfare) in the passenger market. This research contributes to the research in the airlines industry in three ways. First, this research empirically shows the impact of the crisis, COVID-19, which has a much broader and longer-term impact on the airlines industry than prior crises. Second, in addition to other research that introduces the present conditions of COVID-19 and suggests the future directions, this research emphasizes the impact of changes in supply, demand, and airlines’ strategy on consumers. Third, this research expands and empirically shows the current debates about COVID-19 and airlines’ responses towards the pandemic. Future research may include data from other countries, domestic routes, and airlines other than Korean Air to ensure the generalizability and applicability of the findings of this research. Also, future research will need to further examine whether the current demand trends in the cargo market is sustainable in the future or not and how airlines renew their mid- or long-term strategies to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic depending on the sustainability of the cargo market demand.
