Abstract

Blockchain technology based on decentralization is driving innovation across various industries and is particularly garnering attention in the airline industry, which transports passengers and cargo. Blockchain technology enables transactions and data sharing without central authorities or intermediaries, thereby creating new business models and processes. In the aviation industry, blockchain technology is being recognized as a means to enhance service reliability and security. However, current applications of blockchain technology by airlines largely remain focused on the introduction of cryptocurrency-based payment systems and the issuance of NFT-backed assets for marketing purposes. Nevertheless, efforts are anticipated to leverage blockchain technology, particularly by low-cost carriers (LCCs), local airlines, and emerging carriers, lacking resources and competitiveness compared to Full-Service Carriers (FSCs), to establish a differentiated competitive advantage. The airline mileage system, known for its prowess in customer loyalty programs since the 1980s, faces considerable challenges due to prolonged lack of innovation, resulting in excessively low redemption rates, high maintenance costs of mileage systems, and substantial issues such as mileage loss, theft, and fraud. Additionally, in the current scenario where the scalability of networks among global airlines has increased, limitations in terms of openness, compatibility, convenience, and security are observed, leading to heightened consumer skepticism towards mileage programs. This study aims not at introducing blockchain technology for marketing and short-term publicity but rather explores the potential for applying blockchain to airline mileage programs as an alternative to alleviate consumer skepticism and enhance long-term competitiveness of airline businesses. Analyzing the impact of traditional mileage systems and blockchain-applied mileage systems on customer attitudes and behaviors, the study aims to provide insights necessary for airline brand and marketing performance management. The research methodology involved conducting experiments targeting university undergraduate students belonging to Generation Z, known for their high acceptance of new technologies, and surveyed participants' responses based on three scenarios. Results from the analysis of the differences between blockchain mileage and traditional mileage systems revealed that the blockchain mileage group exhibited a higher intention to use, indicating the significant role of loyalty program attitudes in influencing airline usage intentions. Furthermore, it was confirmed that skepticism about mileage exhibited a moderating effect in this relationship. The research findings suggest that blockchain-based mileage systems can contribute to increasing customer loyalty and intentions to use airline services. Subsequent research is necessary to analyze various applications of blockchain-based mileage programs and confirm differences in the effects of technology adoption based on airline types and sizes.
