Abstract

Since the airline payment system that used mobile apps first appeared in the domestic market in 2015, the usage rate has been rapidly increasing recently. As information search, shopping, and payment using mobile apps have become commonplace across various domains, it seems that the usage rate of mobile apps is also greatly increased even in airline tickets payments. Airline companies are thus nowadays more actively pursuing several measures to increase the utilization of mobile apps, but these measures have often faced the criticism that they have not been effective enough to prompt actual behavior changes. This study thus investigates the characteristics that facilitate the use of mobile apps for the purchase of airline tickets from the viewpoint of innovation adoption, and how the favorable attitude formed by the influence of these characteristic dimensions could be manifested as more active word-of-mouth intention. Specifically, by positing the moderating role of loyalty in the relationship between attitude and word-of-mouth intention, this study attempts to shed further light on why consumers are still hesitant in positive word-of-mouth despite of various incentives of airline companies. The empirical analysis based on the data collected from 158 loyal customers for domestic airlines showed that the positive effect of attitude on word of mouth intention was more pronounced for the loyalty group of the market leader than for the market followers. This results confirms that the market leader has a better competitive advantage over the market follower, in terms of word-of-mouth communications.
