Abstract
This study investigates how global airlines create service innovation through the adoption of blockchain and non-fungible token (NFT) technologies and interprets the underlying mechanisms from the perspectives of digital transformation, open innovation, and platform-ecosystem theory. Using a multiple-case approach, six pioneering airlines—Air Europa, Flybondi, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa Group, ANA Group, and airBaltic—were analysed. Qualitative data were collected from peer-reviewed articles, industry reports, and public disclosures, and were triangulated to ensure reliability. The case analysis reveals three key insights. First, blockchain-enabled NFTs convert airline tickets and loyalty points into tradeable digital assets, thereby redesigning customer experience and revenue logic. Second, open innovation, realised through partnerships with specialised blockchain ventures, accelerates the absorption of the new technology. Third, a platform ecosystem that links airlines, customers and allies emerges, amplifying value co-creation and network effects; together these mechanisms deliver tangible benefits such as lower mileage-liability costs, royalty income from secondary-market trades and increased engagement of digitally native customer segments. Airlines embarking on digital transformation should synchronise technology investment with an open- innovation governance model and platform strategy. Managers need to prepare dynamic capabilities that integrate external knowledge while nurturing co-creation with customers. The commercialisation of NFT tickets raises regulatory issues regarding legal status, consumer protection, and cross-border standardisation of smart contracts, calling for proactive policy alignment among industry bodies and aviation authorities. By synthesising three theoretical lenses, this study offers a holistic framework to explain how blockchain and NFT adoption triggers service-innovation mechanisms in aviation. It extends digital-transformation research to a high-reliability service context and provides actionable insights for airline strategists.
