Abstract

The newest medical glossary (the fifth) including 50,580 technical terms was made during the last 3 years. In this paper, we take note of Hangeul transcriptions of loanwords in the glossary. There are two distinct ways for adopting foreign terminology. One is making new words with the same meaning and the other is using the original words themsevles through transcription. The latter is the process for loanwords. We need to decide the spelling of loanwords based on the principle “Hangeul Transcriptions of Loanwords” as a regulation. However, there are some different transcription techniques for each specific medical domain. One of the biggest issues in Hangeul transcriptions of medical loanwords is the origin of word. Initially, the committee for the glossary tried to change the aspect of the origin of medical terms for standardization of terminology. Unfortunately, they suffered failure because they couldn’t reach a consensus nor come up with concrete ideas about delicate plans for applying new principles. We should make sure of consistency in transcribing medical loanwords and try to create proper Korean words matching foreign medical words. It is the desirable way for effective communication and natural development in the medical science of Korea.
