This paper investigates synonymic differences for leaner’s dictionary for synonyms. The differentiation of synonyms can involve four types of variations:lexical variation, stylistic variation, collocational variation, and grammatical variation. This paper discusses how to describe differences of synonyms according to each type of variation in the classification. Lexical variation includes conceptual meaning and expressive meaning and stylistic variation includes register variation. Collocational variation range from predictable selectional restriction to lexical collocations. We treat distinctions of syntactic categories, syntactic frames,semantic roles, and derivation in grammatical variation. Finally this paper provides samples of usage notes to discriminate synonyms in learner’s dictionary of synonyms.
