A Study on Informative Function and Ethical Issue of Dictionary

The purpose of this paper is to explore a rational way in which dictionary can prevent the occurrence of ethical issues arising from discriminatory expressions or hate speech while faithfully performing its informative function. Firstly, this paper confirms that the informative function is an intrinsic function of dictionary and that such function has been continuously expanded through the provision of grammatical and pragmatic informations. Then, this paper notes the possibility that attempts to solve these ethical problems would conflict with the informative function of dictionary. For this reason, existing researches can be divided into two approaches which try to solve ethical problems by reducing informative function of dictionary and magnifying that function. Finally, this paper argues that it is appropriate to resolve ethical problems of Korean dictionary trough the expansion of informative function, particularly providing more pragmatic informations.
