Abstract
This study aims to classify Korean evaluative adjectives that require adverbial clauses led by connective endings such as ‘-어도’ and ‘-어야’ into three categories based on the characteristics of their adverbial clause arguments, and to propose improvements for their syntactic pattern descriptions in dictionaries. First, [Type 1], represented by adjectives like ‘상관없다 (not matter)’ and ‘좋다 (good)’, can function as both one-place and two-place predicates depending on the presence or absence of an experiencer argument. [Type 2], which includes ‘옳다 (right)’ and ‘마땅하다 (proper)’, takes the situation being evaluated as its argument, typically realized as a noun clause or adverbial clause. [Type 3], including ‘싸다 (deserve)’ and ‘소용없다 (useless)’, also has the object of evaluation appear as the subject, but differs in that the criterion of evaluation is realized as an adverbial element. Upon examining the methods of presenting syntactic patterns in dictionaries, criteria for identifying obligatory arguments, and principles for handling experiencer arguments of adjectives for these types, it was found that [Type 1] had only one of the two usages (with or without experiencer argument) described, while [Type 2] varied across dictionaries in whether adverbial clause arguments were presented. For [Type 3], although adverbial clause arguments were frequently observed in corpora, most dictionaries did not describe them. These differences appear to be related to the criteria for distinguishing between syntactic pattern information and grammatical information, and the principles for establishing obligatory arguments. This paper proposed a descriptive approach that reflects the semantic structure of adjectives and corpus usage patterns to more accurately present syntactic pattern information in dictionaries. Additionally, when multiple syntactic patterns are possible, the principle has been specified to present representative patterns considering the characteristics of each type.
