Abstract
[Purpose]This study empirically analyzed Co-CEOs and analyst coverage from the perspective of agency costs. Additionally, the relationship between the Co-CEOs and analyst coverage according to the ratio of outside directors was also examined. [Methodology]Co-CEOs were defined as a dummy variable of 1 if there were multiple managers and 0 if there were single managers, and the number of financial analysts was defined as the number of predicted earnings for the firm. The analysis period is from 2011 to 2021, and companies listed on securities were analyzed. We used multiple regression analysis to analyze hypothesis. [Findings]The analysis results of this study are as follows. First, firms with a Co-CEOs structure had fewer analysts following the firm. Second, as a result of examining samples according to the ratio of outside directors, only the group with a high ratio of outside directors showed a negative relationship between the Co-CEOs and analyst coverage. This is an empirical result supporting the view of previous studies that the better the corporate governance structure, the fewer analysts following the firm. [Implications]This study is meaningful in that it directly examined how the corporate governance of Co-CEOs affected the earnings forecasting activities of financial analysts. In addition, by verifying that there may be differences in the relationship between the structure of Co-CEOs and analyst coverage depending on the independence of the board of directors, it is expected to provide useful implications for capital market participants.
