General education for university students has been the subject of much debate for man y years. At first glance, the general education curriculum may seem pointless and disconn ected from major programs of study. However, with strong leadership and innovative app roaches to education, these programs can clearly connect their purpose to the overall miss ion of the university as well as to the goals of individual majors. Specifically, a dedicated academic unit for general education that employs a transdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning can help meet the demands of preparing students for 21st century profession al and civic life.
