Abstract
Hanyangdoseong Wall is a fortress ruin built up to defend Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a flat mountain wall built by connecting Baekaksan, Inwangsan, Mokaksan, and Namsan with the flat land between them, and has a circumference of 18,127m. Construction began in 1396 (5th year of King Taejo) and was completed two years later in 1398. At that time, Hanyangdoseong Wall was built with Saseong on the flat mountain and Seokseong on the laboratory, and four main gates and four gates were also built. In 1422 (4th year of King Sejong), the wall of Hanyangdoseong, which was severely crumbling, was greatly reduced in several places. The collapsed Seokseong section, including all of the Saseong section, was also reduced in several places using new construction methods. Since then, it has been continuously maintained and repaired, and large-scale reconstruction of several axes was carried out again during the Sujeong and Jungjeong years. The study of Hanyang Capital City has been based on records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and historical research, and has proved its existence through the results of excavation of the wall, and has interpreted it in an integrated manner. In particular, the various provincial stones of Hanyang Capital City have been the main basis for clarifying the changes in the wall, i.e. the outer wall. In archaeology, the study of ruins requires a combination of remains, artifacts, and soil layers, but the study of Hanyang Capital City has neglected this aspect so far. Of course, this is also because there are almost no cases of artifacts being unearthed in excavation surveys of the wall. The analysis of the ruins was centered on the wall section (outer wall, stone axis section and earth axis section of the back plaster), the inner and outer soil layers of the wall, and divided into super-reduced and multiple axis aspects, and the construction process and changes of the wall of Hanyang Capital City, which have been classified in previous studies, were examined and diagrammed. The investigation of the Hanyang Capital Wall unearthed 24 sites in 1999, including the site within the proposed site for the construction of the Russian Embassy in Korea, and the recently excavated site of the Inwang-Baekak Gokseong area. Similarly, the Baekyasan section is from Changuimun to Hyehwamun, the Naksan section is from Hyehwamun to Heunginmun, the Heungininmun section is from Heunginmun to Jangchungdan Park, the Namsan section is from Jangchungdan Park to Baekbong Square ruins, and the Sungnyemun section is from Baekak Square ruins to Yeonuimun. As a result of the analysis, three changes in the Hanyang Capital Wall have been confirmed. The first is the wall during the reign of King Taejo in the Jocheong era, and is Saseon and Seokseong. The second is the first-order axis, which corresponds to the period when the entire wall section was condensed during the reign of King Sejong. The third is the second-order axis, which corresponds to the period after the reign of King Sujeong. Only part of the Saseon shape, which was condensed during the reign of King Taejo, remains, and its actual form is not intuitive. The reason for this is believed to be that the front of Saturn was excavated and the area was reduced to several stone stars. In addition, there is no part that can be mistaken for the stone and earth axis parts of the stone of the primary number axis. The difference between the super-axis Saturn and the earth axis part of the primary number axis must be noted in the oblique cut marks visible on the soil layer. The super-axis Saturn was built on the base layer, and the primary number axis wall was built by excavating the front of the earth fortress, while the primary number axis back-painted earth axis part was built in a simultaneous process after the Saturn was cut in the oblique direction. There is also a difference in the degree of the bottom of the layer between Saturn and the primary number axis back-painted earth axis part. Saturn has a layered pattern, but the strength and density of the primary number axis back-painted earth axis part is lower than Saturn, and it drops as it goes to the back. The super-reduced stone walls built during the reign of King Taejo were made of irregularly shaped or rectangular broken stones stacked in a square or regular layer. Stone and earthen axles have been identified in the lining of the wall. This type of inversion continues in the stone walls built during the reign of King Sejong. In particular, the Baeksa Square ruins show evidence of several axles being reduced from earthen axles to stone walls during the reign of King Taejo. This is entirely possible, as there are records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty that suggest there were several axles even during the reign of King Taejo. The primary axis stonework of Sejong's reign cut the Saseon and Seokseong of Taejo's reign, shortening the entire section by several sections. The relationship between the two is clearly visible on the cross section of the wall and on the soil layer. Also, the style of the outer wall stones and the back-painted stone and soil axis sections show that the Joseon Dynasty's wall construction method was established. After the reign of King Sukjong, Seokseong took on a regular shape, with square broken stones layered on top of each other. This corresponds to a quadratic axis, and at this time the lining of the wall showed changes that were different from previous periods. The outer wall facing stones of the lining of the wall became larger, and the importance of the facing stones became concentrated. In this way, the facing stones of the outer wall were built by fitting together without any gaps, and the cross-sections of the facing stones were triangular, trimmed, and right-angled, with small broken stones and sand filling in between. In this way, the facing stones became regular and larger, and the lining changed, but its importance appears to have decreased. Finally, we wanted to understand through excavation how the walls were rebuilt and restored when they collapsed or were damaged during the Joseon period and in modern times. During the Joseon period, we found that when large-scale multi-axes were built at major turning points, the shape and size of the outer wall's facing stones changed. If the wall collapsed between or after such large-scale multi-axes, it is assumed that the existing facing stones were reused and rebuilt, but there are limitations to finding evidence for this, but at the Baekhan Square ruins, we were able to find a rebuilt candle. In addition, traces of the walls restored in modern times have been confirmed as having been built using cement in the foundations at the bottom of the walls. Therefore, in order to discover the authenticity of Hanyang as a capital city, we need to focus on understanding its original form through excavation of the walls, and we think it would be meaningful to collect the results of this and reinterpret them.
