제임스 S. 게일의 『한국민족사』는 영어로 쓰여진 한국 역사서로, 고대 한국부터 조선 말기까지의 역사적 사건과 인물을 다룬다. 게일은 영어권 독자들에게 한국 역사를 보다 친숙하게 전달하기 위해 서양 역사와 비교하며 각 시대의 대표적인 인물을 중심으로 서술한다. 본 연구는 게일의 동서양 인물 비교가 대학의 인문 교양 교육에 활용될 가능성에 초점을 맞추어 『한국민족사』를 분석한다. 이 책에 언급된 서양 인물들을 분석하고, 게일이 동서양의 역사적 사건과 인물 간의 유사성을 어떻게 드러내고 있는지를 살펴본다. 이를 토대로 인문 교양 교육에 활용할 수 있는 여러 수업 방식을 제안한다. 이러한 비교 문화적 접근은 동서양의 역사적 맥락을 통합하는 새로운 시각을 제공하며, 학습자들에게 다차원적인 역사 이해를 가능하게 한다. 나아가, 학문적으로 깊이 있으며 교육적으로 유익한 도구로서, 학생들이 역사적 사건과 인물을 다각도로 분석하고 비판적으로 사고할 수 있는 능력을 배양하는 데 기여할 것으로 예상된다.
Abstract
James S. Gale's The History of the Korean People is an English-language history book that chronicles events and figures from ancient Korea to the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Gale makes Korean history more accessible to English-speaking readers by comparing it with Western history, focusing on key figures from each era. This study examines the potential of Gale's comparative method for use in integrated humanities education at universities. It classifies the Western figures mentioned in The History of the Korean People and analyze the basis for Gale's comparisons. The study highlights how Gale’s approach, which juxtaposes Korean and Western historical figures, provides a model for broader application in integrated humanities education. This comparative historical method offers a framework for students to gain a multidimensional understanding of history. Furthermore, it discusses how Gale’s narrative strategy bridges Eastern and Western historical contexts, enhancing cultural understanding and critical thinking skills. By integrating historical narratives from different cultures, Gale’s work fosters a comprehensive and interconnected view of global history, making it a valuable resource for humanities education.
