본고는 제임스 게일의 A History of the Korean People (『한국민족사』, 1927)에 수록된 한국 한시의 목록을 제시하고, 그 특성과 의의를 밝히는 데 목적을 두고, 여기에 34명의 작가가 쓴 74편의 영역 한시가 있다는 것을 밝혔다. 한국 한시는 단군 시대부터 조선의 멸망에 이르도록 골고루 배치되어 있었고, 대부분은 한시사에서 중요하게 거론되는 문인들이었지만, 한시 작가로는 잘 언급되지 않는 인물들도 더러 있었다. 고체시와 근체시가 유사한 비율로 들어 있고, 절구와 율시도 같은 비율로 존재하는데 이는 한국 한시의 전반적 경향과는 약간 다르다. 이러한 차이가 발생하게 된 것은 게일의 선별 기준이 문학적 성취 여부보다는, 시의 주제나 소재에 있었기 때문이라고 보았다. 『한국민족사』 소재 한시는 게일이 한국 민족의 내면을 가장 잘 보여주는 대표시로 선별한 것이라는 점에서, 그리고 한시에 대한 게일의 인식을 잘 보여준다는 점에서 중요하다. 게일은 한시와 다른 고전시와의 차이를 분명하게 인식하였고, 한시를 지칭할 때는 ‘시(Poem)’라는 용어를 사용하며 한국 문학의 정수로 삼았다. 그리고 이를 통해 당시 한국에 대한 정보가 거의 없어 미개한 나라로 인식하던 서구 사회에 한국 민족이 유구한 역사를 지닌 문화 민족이라는 사실을 알리고자 하였다. 이러한 게일의 의도는 독자에게 전달되어, 1929년 한국을 방문했던 그릭스비가 게일 덕분에 ‘옛 한국’을 사랑하게 되었다면서 게일의 번역시를 다시 번역하여 1935년 한국고전시선집 The Orchid Door을 간행하였다. 이 책에 실린 한시 중 일부는 다양한 문헌에 인용되며 20세기 후반까지 한국을 대표하는 시로 소개되고 있다.
Abstract
This paper aims to present a catalog of Korean Hansi (韓國漢詩, Korean poem written in Chinese) included in James S. Gale's A History of the Korean People (1927) and to clarify their characteristics and significance. This paper identifies 74 translated Hansi written by 34 authors. These poems are distributed across Korea’s historical timeline, from the Dangun (檀君) era to the Joseon (朝鮮) Dynasty’s fall. While most authors are prominent figures frequently cited in discussions of Korean Hansi, some are lesser-known individuals rarely mentioned as poets. Both ancient-style (古體詩) and modern-style poetry (近體詩) are represented in nearly equal proportions, as are quatrains (絶句) and octonary verses (律詩). This distribution diverges somewhat from the general trends in Korean Hansi, a difference attributed to Gale’s selection criteria, which appear to have prioritized thematic content and subject matter over purely literary achievement. The Hansi featured in A History of the Korean People hold significance as works Gale deemed most representative of the inner spirit of the Korean people. They also reflect Gale’s perception of Hansi, which he regarded as distinct from other forms of classical Korean poetry. Notably, he exclusively referred to Hansi as ‘poems’ and esteemed them as the pinnacle of Korean literary expression. By doing so, Gale introduced Korea to Western readers as a culturally rich nation with an ancient history. This intent resonated with readers, as evidenced by Joan S. Grigsby, who visited Korea in 1929 and credited Gale with inspiring his affection for ‘Old Korea’. Grigsby further translated Gale’s collection and published The Orchid Door, an anthology of classical Korean poetry, in 1935. Some of the poems in this work were subsequently cited in various publications and continued to be introduced as representative works of Korea throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
