본고는 역사서로 알려진 제임스 게일의 A History of the Korean People (『한국민족사』)을 문학적 관점에서 접근해야 하는 이유를 밝히는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 『한국민족사』는 단군부터 19세기 말까지 이어진 한국민족의 역사를 서술한 책인데, 은퇴를 앞둔 게일이 1927년에 간행한 것으로, 게일 한국학 연구의 결정판이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 역사서로서 『한국민족사』에 대한 평가는 부정적이었기에 본고는 문학적 관점에서 접근할 것을 제안한다. 문학적 관점에서의 접근이 필요한 첫 번째 이유는 서명에서 드러난 게일의 집필 의도 때문이다. 서명으로 볼 때, 『한국민족사』는 ‘한국’이라는 국가보다는, 그 구성원인 ‘한국민족’에 초점을 두고 있다. 애초부터 국가의 흥망성쇠를 정리하기 위한 책이 아니기에, 저자의 집필 의도를 고려하여 재조명할 필요가 있다. 『한국민족사』에 문학적 관점이 필요한 두 번째 이유는, 게일이 ‘한국인의 내면세계’를 보여주는 것이 바로 ‘한국문학’이라고 주장하였기 때문이다. 게다가 1918년에 발표한 「한국문학」은 『한국민족사』와 그 구성방식이 유사하며, 11편의 문학 작품이 공통적으로 들어있을 만큼 관련이 깊다. 문학적 관점이 필요한 세 번째 이유는 『한국민족사』에 다수의 문학 작품이 들어있기 때문이다. 『한국민족사』에는 한시, 사, 부, 국문시가 등 90편이 넘는 운문이 들어있으며, 신화, 전설, 민담, 비문, 묘지, 서문, 연행록, 편지 등 다양한 종류의 산문도 50편 이상 들어있다. 집필 의도나 구성 방식에서 일반적인 역사서와 상당한 차이를 보이는 『한국민족사』를 문학적 관점에서 접근한다면 이 책의 가치를 재발견하고, 『한국민족사』를 20세기 초반에 영역된 한국고전문학의 보고(寶庫)로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper seeks to reilluminate the literary value of James S. Gale’s A History of the Korean People. The text chronicles the history of the Korean people from B.C. 2333 Dangun(檀君) Era to the end of the 19th century. Published in 1927, imminent of Gale’s retirement, the text can be seen as a culmination of Gale's work in Korean Studies. However, it was criticized by Richard Rutt, the editor of the 1972 annotated edition of A History of the Korean People, for its lack of historical merits and rigor. This paper revisits the text from a literary perspective. First, as hinted by the title, the text chronicles the citizenries comprising the nation of Korea, the ‘Korean People’, rather than the political entity of ‘Korea’: Gale never intented the text to be a thorough, comprehensive recount of political and diplomatic history, and it is important to consider the author’s intent. Next, Gale argues in the text that the inner world of Koreans is best revealed by its literature, a position similarly taken in his other works such as “Korean Literature” presented in 1918. Lastly, the text embeds a significant number of source Korean classical literature: the text contains various types of poetry such as Sino-Korean poetry(漢詩) and Sijo(時調) totaling over 90 works, and more than 50 works of mythology, legend, folk tale, inscription, preface, travelog and letters. Showing a composition demonstrably deviant from that of a typical history textbook, this paper revisits the A History of the Korean People from a novel literary approach and argues its potential to be an invaluable resource for Korean Classical Literature Studies.
