Abstract

This study focuses on immersive exhibitions, an emerging exhibition format, with the aim of identifying their distinctive characteristics and elucidating the meaning of fantasy as it appears in their content. Beyond merely mediating artistic experiences, immersive exhibitions are increasingly establishing themselves as an independent domain through the rise of commercial exhibition content and professional creative groups that prioritize the immersive experience itself. Accordingly, there is a growing need for academic discussion on the unique experiential value and identity of such content. Previous research has primarily described the characteristics of immersive exhibitions in terms of technological features and multisensory experiences. In contrast, this study adopts a phenomenological perspective that conceptualizes immersive exhibitions as experiences of heterogeneous simulated environments and draws attention to the accompanying element of fantasy. To this end, it examines theoretical discussions of fantasy at the formal level, with particular emphasis on its structural foundations in spatial contexts.Building on this theoretical groundwork, the study analyzes the manifestation of fantasy in two immersive exhibition cases—teamLab Planets and Arte Museum Jeju—categorizing them into rhetorical structures of sameness and difference at the structural level, and into the enactment of visitor hesitation and collaborative fantasy at the performative level. The analysis identifies three dimensions of fantasy in immersive exhibitions.First, the fantasy constructed within immersive exhibitions functions as a commodified experiential product. Second, fantasy serves as a mechanism for transformation and the reconfiguration of perception, thereby inducing immersion. Finally, the study points to the necessity of a content circulation system grounded in reality. Through this analysis, the study expands the discourse on immersive exhibition content and offers insights into the significance and future potential of immersive formats within contemporary exhibition culture.
