Abstract

This study identifies and examines the genre characteristics of a subgenre of games referred to as ‘Ending-Collective games.’ An Ending Collection Game, as defined herein, signifies a game type possessing a system that induces players to repeatedly engage with the same game text to accumulate a variety of endings. We argue that the continuous production of such works has established the properties of a subgenre. While many narrative-driven single-player story games feature multiple endings, Ending-Collective games are distinguished by the fact that their primary objective is to collect a series of possible worlds (i.e., diverse endings) through iterative processes, unlike general game systems focused on ‘clearing levels.’ In these games, players are confronted with numerous choices, each leading to entry into a different possible world. This study takes the PC game <Bad End Theater>, which features the most diverse set of endings among games released in the last five years, as a representative example. We investigate the patterns of possible world implementation in Ending-Collective games and analyze how this structure fulfills players’ narrative needs. In the storytelling of this work, the ‘textual actual world’ corresponding to the core play experience is condensed to approximately five minutes of content, while the ‘textual alternative possible worlds’ corresponding to diverse endings are maximally expanded, possessing forty-three distinct structures. This constitutes a design strategy focused on presenting players with various narrative possibilities rather than prioritizing the play experience itself. Players are thus encouraged to explore multiple possible worlds by modifying and supplementing their past choices. Ultimately, by implementing a multitude of possible worlds during the planning and strategizing phases, Ending-Collective games guide players toward a flexible interpretation of the narrative structure, allowing for diverse interpretations within a limited textual framework.
