종결어미‘-지(요)’의 의미와 용법 -평서문에 쓰인 ‘-지(요)’를 중심으로-

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning and usage of the finalending ending ‘-지(요)’ having various functions, and to clarify the functionsperformed in the discourse. In a declarative sentences, ‘-지(요)’ is used to say thecontent that listeners can easily infer and agree or accept in the context of adiscourse. In order to see how ‘-지(요)’ functions in actual discourse, we analyzednarrative-style discourses, for example, essays in the form of monologues,narrative-style writings in the form of literary style, and colloquial texts telling tooneself in the form of a somewhat long story. In narrative-style discourses, the speaker uses ‘-지(요)’ to introduce topicsfamiliar to the listener, or to change the focus of the topic. In addition, ‘-지(요)’is used when an example is given or additional explanation is required in theprocess of a story. In the case of additional explanation, speaker's purpose ofutterance do clearly reveal in this additional explanation. In regarding to thecontents that listeners can easily infer and agree or accept in the context of adiscourse, we can infer them from the data that the speaker and listener arelooking at simultaneously as in lectures, speeches, and presentations. Therefore, ‘-지(요)’ would be used to explain the data that the speaker and listener arelooking at simultaneously.
